THE REST OF THE STORY ...
The house is a 100-year-old farmhouse that had been remodeled and added onto several times, so there were lots of challenges with the space. The homeowners fell in love with the farmhouse because of its history and charm, so the vision was to incorporate timeless, white painted inset cabinets with touches of warm wood tones to give them a kitchen that fit their historic home perfectly.
The biggest challenges were the multiple doors, doorways, and windows in the space which totaled nine! The team talked a lot about the flow and functionality of the space, making sure the homeowners had enough walk space around the island and plenty of room for prep, entertaining, serving, and cooking. The team moved location of the appliances, so the cooking center was right next to the sink and the island, moving prep and cleanup away from the entertaining area. The homeowners have a large family and they love to cook so being able to accommodate a large range top, built-in refrigerator, and double ovens was at the top of their list. And they had a more unique request as well ... to incorporate a TV into the cabinets in the breakfast area. For the beam that felt off-center, the team added two more decorative beams to balance out the space. And they changed the square doorway to match the charming arched doorway on the other side of the kitchen.
The homeowners loved everything about their new space: The extra storage, the improved flow, the warm details with the wood accents. Now, their whole family can be in the kitchen and there is a place for them to gather at the large inviting island and plenty of space for entertaining on the other countertops. There is a drop-zone for charging devices and sorting mail, a TV zone, a coffee zone, prep zone, and even a bar for entertaining. The previous owners of the home live across the street and they were blown away by the renovation of their old kitchen.
The design team really loves the warm wood tones with the range hood and floating shelves that contrast the white cabinets. The team used the same stain on the hood, wood clad beams, and the new wood pantry doors to repeat that decorative element in the space and make it all cohesive. It feels warm and classic in this modern kitchen that feels just right in this 100-year-old farmhouse.
The showroom is just down the street from their home so they found the design team online and walked into the showroom to ask about cabinets. They mentioned their 100-year-old farmhouse so the team immediately showed them Showplace inset cabinets and they fell in love.
The husband is an electrical engineer so he was great to work with. He had his vision all sketched out on vellum when the team came out to meet with them, so he had a good start for the project, but needed design help. The team showed him a version of his design with recommendations and how we could improve upon his vision. It was very collaborative. They are such an amazing family. They wanted to adopt us and include us in their family dinners!
COMMENTS FROM OUR JUDGES ...
Not only is this beautiful, but it is purposeful and creates a space that a wheelchair-bound homeowner can confidently be independent! That is such a wonderful gift to give this whole family.
Unexpected cabinet color that you don't always see. Love it! Love shelf in the corner.
Great minimalist design without compromising access. No upper cabinetry of course makes sense when dealing with clients who can't reach it and the placement of the windows still keeps that wall interesting, along with the floating shelf. The base cabinets are wonderful in accessibility.
Gorgeous! So light and airy and minimalistic without being cold. Outstanding job of staging!
Great, accessible work flow without making it look like an "adapted" kitchen.
Just as functional as it is stunning. A beautiful job!!! Well done!
Beautiful kitchen.
Elegant use of materials.
The materials are a perfect blend of warm, sleek, and natural. I really like the natural cabinets, the extensive use of the Carrara marble, the blend of seating, open shelving, and the lighter wood-look flooring.
Very convenient kitchen for work flow. The layout allows for nice prep areas without feeling crowded at all.
I like everything about this space!
Very nice kitchen and photos.
